| What is regulated medical waste (RMW)? |
| |
| RMW consists of several classes, including cultures and stocks of infectious agents and associated biologicals, human pathological waste, human blood and blood products, needles syringes and sharps, contaminated animal waste including carcasses, and isolation wastes from patients with highly communicable diseases. Each of these classes of RMW is required to be treated (to kill pathogens or disease-causing organisms) and destroyed (ground or minced into small unrecognizable pieces) prior to disposal, at an authorized solid waste management facility. |

| Who uses the MedAssure process? |
| |
| The technology employed by MedAssure is used by healthcare facilities nationwide, ranging from large hospital systems to doctors’ offices to transform dangerous medical waste into low-volume, clean, non-infectious material that requires no further treatment and can be safely disposed of in municipal landfills. The process is also HIPAA compliant, protecting patient privacy and preventing possible identity theft by ensuring that all patient information on medical waste is rendered unrecognizable. |

| Is the MedAssure process safe? |
| |
| The MedAssure process uses an automatic lift/load system, eliminating double and triple waste handling and thereby reducing risk to operators. Process and engineering controls built in throughout the system virtually eliminate occupational exposures such as spills, lifting, and needle stick injuries commonly associated with medical waste handling. Waste can be collected and stored at the point of generation, transported, and treated using a one-container system. No special (e.g. autoclavable) bags or boxes are required. |

| How does the MedAssure facility affect the community? |
| |
MedAssure is committed to being a good neighbor. The decisions on the location of our facility and the choice of technology were made with our neighborhood in mind. Our facility is in an area that is zoned for commercial/industrial use, so there are no residential neighbors nearby. The facility is also designed to provide easy access for the trucks that deliver medical waste, ensuring that the traffic flow remains constant and fluid. The actual processing of medical waste is done in a closed unit which is located inside a building. The technology MedAssure uses does not create noise, odors or emissions and minimizes any exposure to the neighbors.
Another benefit to the community, as well as the state and region, is the availability – for the first time – of a safe, local site for the disposal of regulated medical waste. This advantage will lower costs to the many health care providers in the region who now ship their waste great distances to be processed and disposed of. |
